Assignment Details


As a member of a SUSIE response team, you will do the following:
  1. Select a motivation perspective (we'll do this in class and I'll make sure each perspective is selected by at least one group). NOTE: FOR THE ONLINE CLASS, EACH GROUP SHOULD EMAIL THEIR TOP 3 PREFERENCES TO ME. AGAIN, I'LL MAKE SURE EACH PERSPECTIVE IS SELECTED BY AT LEAST ONE GROUP SO YOU MAY NOT GET YOUR TOP CHOICE. BUT THEY ARE ALL GREAT, SO DON'T WORRY. :)
  2. Complete the learning activities for your group's motivation perspective.
  3. Review the PowerPoint slides for your group's motivation perspective.
  4. Assign individual responsibilities.
  5. Research your motivation perspective using the Article Archive and any other sources you want to look up.
  6. Create a wiki that (a) provides information about your selected motivational perspective and (b) analyzes Calvin's motivational problems from the selected perspective and identifies solutions.
  7. Provide a review of two other teams' wikis.
  8. Give a ten-minute presentation to the other teams in which you (engagingly) illuminate Calvin's motivational problems and propose solutions. NOTE: THE ONLINE CLASS WILL NOT DO A PRESENTATION.
  9. Finalize your wiki and submit a brief individual report to the SUSIE Deputy Director (Dr. Pugh) clarifying you contributions and efforts as a SUSIE team member and the contributions and efforts of the others on your team.
  10. After completing these assignments, you will join with members of other response teams and write an action plan letter to Ms. Wormwood (Calvin's teacher) outlining a comprehensive response plan (i.e., a response plan that takes into all the motivational perspectives).

Individual Responsibilities

This project—like all group projects—will work better if you assign individual responsibilities and are held accountable for these responsibilities. Thus, I am requiring each group to assign individual responsibilities using the attached template:

One group member should submit a filled-in template in Blackboard.

At the conclusion of the project, I will have you submit a short report of what you and your team members contributed. See the Individual Report.

Note that not everyone in your group will necessarily receive the same grade for the project. Your individual grade will depend on whether you completed your responsibilities and the quality with which you did so.

Research Your Motivation Perspective

The Article Archive has a set of resource materials for each motivation perspective. Each group member should read at least two of these resources and compile information for the group. Ideally, the compiled information should be organized according to the four "Description of Your Motivational Perspective" questions (see Instructions on the Wiki) and include page #s. For example, any information you find in your articles about effective teaching methods should be organized under the heading of Teaching Methods. All the information - whether direct quotes or not - should be linked to an article and page #. That way, the individual(s) responsible for the teaching methods section knows what the pertinent information is and where to find it.

Use the File Exchange in your Blackboard group site to share your report.

Instructions on the Wiki
Your response team will create a wiki that (a) describes your motivational perspective and (b) analyzes Calvin and identifies solutions.

Description of your motivational perspective
The goal here is to explain your motivational perspective in a way that other teams can understand. Your description should address the following four questions:
  1. What are the main motivational patterns described by your perspective? Identify these patterns and describe them in detail. For example, Learned Helplessness is one of the main patterns described by Attribution Theory.
  2. How do these patterns influence learning and achievement? For each pattern you identify, describe the consequences. For example, a performance-avoidance goal orientation has a number of negative impacts on learning and school performance.
  3. What is the cause of these motivational patterns (i.e., why do students adopt these particular motivational patterns?)? For each pattern, identify and describe the factors or conditions that influence students to adopt the patterns. For example, an autonomy supportive environment is one of the factors that influences students to be intrinsically motivated.
  4. What teaching methods are effective at fostering productive motivation patterns? Identify and describe methods for fostering the positive motivation patterns related to your motivational perspective. Also, explain why these methods are effective. For example, using reflective journals is one strategy that helps foster self-regulated learning because they help students develop metacognition.
Be sure to focus on your motivational perspective in addressing the above questions and back up your statements by making references to the research. Cite the sources of all the information you use. APA format is best.

As part of this description, include at least one figure, chart, or diagram. You can use a feature like SmartArt in MS Word or PowerPoint to create it. Then you will have to "save as" in .jpg or .gif format. For the on-campus class, the program Inspiration is installed on the computers and I will show you have to use this program to make a figure or diagram. Online students can download a free trail version of Inspiration if you want to check it out. I will post an instructional video of how to create a figure/diagram and put it in your wiki.

Analysis of Calvin's motivational problems and suggestions for solutions
We're counting on your team to help us out with Calvin. Your report should thoroughly and thoughtfully address the following three questions:
  1. What is Calvin's motivational pattern? In part 1 of the description, you identified the main motivational patterns described by your perspective. Now we need you to identify which of these patterns Calvin displays. Be sure to refer to specific actions that illustrate which pattern(s) Calvin displays.
  2. Why does Calvin have this motivational pattern? In part 3 of the description, you described factors that influence students' motivational patterns. Now use this information to figure out what is causing Calvin to display his particular motivational pattern.
  3. How can Ms. Wormwood foster a more productive motivational pattern? In part 4 of the description, you identified teaching methods that foster productive patterns. Now explain how Ms. Wormwood could apply these methods to help Calvin. Provide specific examples and thorough explanations. Clarify how the methods will solve the cause of the problem (which you just identified in part 2).
As with the description, be sure you focus on your motivational perspective in addressing the above questions.

There isn't one right way to create the wiki. However, most groups have a home page and create separate pages for each question.

Review of Other Teams' Wikis

Your team will be assigned to review two other teams’ wikis. Likewise, your wiki will be reviewed by two other teams. Review assignments will be given in class or emailed (online class).

Here is some advice regarding your reviews:
  • Be authentic. You will asked to assume the role of Ms. Wormwood. Try to do this as realistically as possible. That is, try to review the website as if you are a real teacher seeking help in dealing with Calvin.
  • Be a "critical friend." That is, point our weaknesses but do so in a respectful manner.
  • Be specific. Refer to particular paragraphs or sentences when appropriate. The more specific you can be, the more useful your feedback will be.

You can split your group up to complete the 2 reviews. My evaluation of your peer reviews will be based on the quality of the comments you provide (the more detailed and thoughtful comments the better).

ONLINE CLASS ONLY: Have one reviewer submit the review in Blackboard. Click the Calvin Projects link and find the peer review assignment. I will remove names and upload "blind" reviews to each group Blackboard site using the file exchange.

Ten-Minute Presentation
Your team will do a ten-minute presentation in which you help us understand your motivational perspective and illustrate how it can be used to understand Calvin's motivational problems and design effective solutions. Try to make this presentation engaging and don't overwhelm us with information. We will read your wiki. The presentation is your chance to convey your key insights and ideas in a clever way.

Your presentation will be evaluated in terms of the degree to which it was a) useful and informative, b) interesting and engaging, and c) prepared and organized. The other teams will rate your presentation in terms of these criteria and I will average their ratings with my own.

Individual Report

For the most part, I believe it is the team's responsibility to make sure everyone participates and that all the work is up to standard. However, this is not always possible. As a result, I require individual accountability for the project. To do this, I ask you to write a short (1 page) report of your contributions to the development of your team’s wiki and presentation. This report should describe each of the activities that you participated in and what your personal responsibilities were. Be specific. I also would like you to provide an account of the contributions of each of your team members.

Submit your report in Blackboard (go to the Calvin Project page). This is an individual, not a group assignment.

Action Plan Letter
As part of a new team comprised of one “expert” on each of the motivational perspectives (think jigsaw method), you will write a letter to Ms. Wormwood laying out an action plan for dealing with Calvin’s motivational problems. This plan will be based on a synthesis of all the motivational perspectives.

The action plan should do two things:
  1. Provide specific advice on what Ms. Wormwood could do to improve Calvin’s motivational patterns.
  2. Provide a theory-based rationale for each piece of advice. Theory-based means that your rationale (i.e., justification for the advice) is grounded in at least one of the motivational theories.

Moreover, each team member will have responsibility for one of the aspects of education listed below. This means he or she is responsible for making sure the team provides sound and thorough advice for that aspect. The number of aspects your team addresses depends on the number of people in your group. If you have four in your group, choose four aspects. If you have five, choose five and so on. Here are the aspects of education:
  • Curriculum: What kind of subject matter should be taught? How much should be covered? How should the sequence of content be structured?
  • Instruction: How should the subject matter be taught? What methods and models of teaching should Ms. Wormwood use?
  • Assessment: How should learning be assessed? What kinds of assessments should Mr. Wormwood use? How should she use and discuss these assessments with Calvin?
  • Classroom Management: What methods should Ms. Wormwood use to address Calvin's misbehavior during class?
  • One-on-one Interaction: There are many opportunities Ms. Wormwood has to interact with Calvin, such as when she hands back a test, gives an assignment, or reviews homework. What should she say to Calvin? How should she interact?
  • Communication with Calvin's Parents: What should Ms. Wormwood tell Calvin's parents? How could they help out with Calvin's situation?

Plan for completing this project:
  1. Have group members share insights about how their motivation perspective informs each aspect. For example, if my perspective is Interest Theory, then I would share insights from interest theory regarding curriculum design, instructional methods, assessment, and so on. ONLINE CLASS: I WILL CREATE ACTION PLAN GROUP SITES IN BLACKBOARD AND SET UP A DISCUSSION BOARD FORUM TO FACILITATE THIS EXCHANGE.
  2. The person responsible for each aspect should take notes on insights related to his/her chosen aspect. For example, if I am responsible for Curriculum, then I will take notes on the insights from all the theories about curriculum design. I will use these notes as a basis for my part of the action plan letter.
  3. Review the wiki's created by other groups and the PowerPoint slides for the other motivation perspectives.
  4. Finally, the action plan team should create a wiki (in the Action Plan project) that is a letter to Ms. Wormwood. Each person should contribute a section on the aspect of education they are responsible for. Be sure to include your name with the section. This wiki can be a single page or you can create separate pages for each aspect of education.

Please write your plan in letter form addressing Ms. Wormwood and write it in language she will be able to understand.
